Principle

A beam of potassium atoms generated in a hot furnace travels along a specific path in a magnetic two-wire field. Because of the magnetic moment of the potassium atoms, the non-homogeneous magnetic field causes the beam to split into two partial beams, corresponding to the two possible orientations of the magnetic moment in the field. This experiment demonstrates the directional quantization of the angular momentum of atoms.
